چکیده
I n t e r v e n t i o n Patients were allocated to once-daily losartanbased therapy (n = 660) or atenolol-based therapy (n = 666) with hydrochlorothiazide as the second agent in both groups to reach a target systolic BP < 140 mm Hg. M a i n o u t c o m e m e a s u r e s A composite endpoint of cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke. Secondary outcomes included all-cause mortality and new-onset diabetes mellitus.

The effects of losartan compared to atenolol on stroke in patients with isolated systolic hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. The LIFE study.
The Losartan Intervention For Endpoint reduction in hypertension (LIFE) study reported that a losartan-based antihypertensive regimen reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (composite of cardiovascular death, stroke, and myocardial infarction) more than therapy based on atenolol in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and isolated systolic hypertension (ISH). Patients aged 55-80 y...
متن کاملEffects of losartan on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with isolated systolic hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy: a Losartan Intervention for Endpoint Reduction (LIFE) substudy.
CONTEXT Drug intervention in placebo-controlled trials has been beneficial in isolated systolic hypertension. OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that losartan improves outcome better than atenolol in patients with isolated systolic hypertension and electrocardiographically documented left ventricular hypertrophy (ECG-LVH). DESIGN Double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study conducted in 199...
متن کاملGender differences in left ventricular structure and function during antihypertensive treatment: the Losartan Intervention for Endpoint Reduction in Hypertension Study.
In hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy, antihypertensive treatment induces changes in left ventricular structure and function. However, less is known about gender differences in this response. Baseline and annual echocardiograms until the end of study or a primary end point occurred were assessed in 863 hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertr...
متن کاملLosartan reduced stroke and new onset diabetes more than atenolol in essential hypertension with signs of left ventricular hypertrophy.
Patients 9222 patients 55–80 years of age (mean age 67 y, 54% women) with hypertension (sitting blood pressure [BP] of 160–200 mmHg systolic, 95–115 mm Hg diastolic, or both after 1–2 wks of placebo) and electrocardiographic signs of LVH. Exclusion criteria included secondary hypertension; myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke within the previous 6 months; angina pectoris requiring treatment wit...
متن کاملHeart failure prevention is the best option to stem high costs and disease burden: research for more effective heart failure treatment is needed.
In this issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, Okin and colleagues1 report on the incidence of heart failure in a cohort of patients with hypertension enrolled in the Losartan Intervention for End Point Reduction in Hypertension (LIFE) study. This study, an international randomized trial, demonstrated that losartan, when compared with atenolol, provided superior reduction of...
